SFH - Mayor On Crack 45 (UP047)
Toronto’s “mayor” Rob Ford is an ignorant, corrupt, lying, bigoted, drunken buffoon of a drug addict without any sense of shame or decency, so it’s clearly incumbent upon us to issue a punk rock record attacking him personally.

Luckily, Warren Kinsella’s SFH have already recorded an appropriate response to this unfortunate episode in our city’s history, so we at Ugly Pop Vinyl are putting it on the 7” vinyl disc it deserves. Kinsella is known to aficionados of Canadian punk for his part in 1980’s HOT NASTIES EP (one of the greatest Canadian records of all time, already reissued on Ugly Pop and now in its fourth pressing), and to most of the country as a persistent thorn in the side of the national Right, from his days engineering Liberal election strategy and taunting the likes of Stockwell Day right up to his current role as progressive voice in public debate and author of last year’s “Fight the Right”, a manual for the rolling back of Canada’s conservative tide. His present band continue to churn out the sort of tuneful, topical but angry punk that the tasteless goons of Ford Nation would find decidedly unappealing.

Titled “Mayor On Crack” and backed with an especially sweet b-side surprise, this will be a limited pressed of 500 copies, 300 on cocaine white vinyl and 200 on blackmail black. Expect availability in approximately two months.

RECOMMENDED

I’ve loved Hackamore Brick since the first time I heard them, over a decade ago, thanks to a well-conisdered intervention from the bins at Mercer Street Books by a good friend. When the group’s songwriters surfaced to play after some 30-odd years, this friend and I interviewed…

COCKNEY REJECTS - Flares ‘n Slippers EP
Released on Small Wonder in 1979, this unassuming slab signalled the
emergence of a new genre, kickstarting both the Rejects’ career and
the entire oi movement. Debuting with three tracks of quick, raw and
exuberant punk rock clearly inspired by the likes of Cock Sparrer, UK
Subs and Sham 69, Cockney Rejects went on to sign with EMI and write a
number of all time classics, but this is where it all started.
High-quality authorised reissue, taken from the masters and packaged
in full colour jacket. (UP043)

THE BUSINESS - Harry May 45
One of the three or four all-time great oi singles, this debut 45 from
the seminal skinhead band exploded out of east London in 1981, pairing
up two 100% monster street punk tracks and spending three months in
the UK indie charts, peaking at #13. The Business have gone on to
release many genre classics since, but this will always be their
finest moment, and remains essential for fans of pure punk rock.
High-quality authorised reissue, taken from the masters and in the
iconic original sleeve. (UP044)

1994 maybe? A great weekend in Canada.

I did this flyer/gig in 1995. Yikes.
